What is the Ottawa 1701 Treaty Council?
The Council was formed by a group of Indigenous trading post owners operating in the Ottawa area. The council is works to uphold Aboriginal and treaty rights and seeks to educate the public and government bodies about Indigenous rights in Ottawa.
Who attended the Ottawa Treaty Council?
The treaty council has members of many different Indigenous nations who live and work in Ottawa. In addition to Algonquin members from Kitigan Zibi and Pikwakanagan, there are Mohawk members from Tyendinaga, as well as Mi’kmaw, Cree, and Anishinaabe members of the Council.
Why was the Ottawa 1701 Treaty Council founded?
The Council was formed to push back against underhanded actions by the Ottawa Police Services to threaten and intimidate the landlords renting to Indigenous trading posts. The formation of this council marks a return to traditional organizing amongst members of Indigenous nations exercising their rights.
Where was the Ottawa 1701 Treaty Council founded?
The council was founded in Ottawa at a meeting on April 2, 2025. The Council plans to meet on a monthly basis going forwards.
